WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Trump administration has terminated the Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, a move confirmed by a senior White House official on Friday. The decision reverses a one-year extension that had been approved by then-President Joe Biden before he left office in January 2025.
According to Reuters, former vice presidents are typically granted six months of Secret Service protection after their term ends. In this case, President Biden had extended Harris’s security until January 2026. However, a letter reviewed by CNN, sent from the White House to Harris, states that her additional security will be discontinued as of September 1, 2025.
The letter, as quoted by CNN, explicitly authorizes the discontinuation of “any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law.” This decision comes as Harris prepares for a high-profile, multi-city book tour to promote her new memoir, 107 Days, which chronicles her brief presidential campaign. The book is scheduled for release on September 23.
In a statement to Reuters, Kirsten Allen, a senior advisor to Harris, conveyed the former Vice President’s gratitude for the agency’s service. “The vice president is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” Allen said.
The decision follows the 2024 presidential election, where Donald Trump defeated Harris after she replaced Joe Biden as the Democratic candidate
