Washington, DC [US]: United States President Donald Trump, in a provocative statement, wished Canadians “good luck” as they vote in their federal election and once again urged Canada to consider becoming the 51st state of the United States.
Posting on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump asserted that the U.S. spends “hundreds of billions of dollars a year” on Canada — a level of financial support he argues is no longer justifiable unless Canada formally joins the United States.
“Good luck to the Great people of Canada. Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, increase your military power, for free, to the highest level in the world… All positives with no negatives. It was meant to be!” Trump wrote.
He further emphasized that dissolving the U.S.-Canada border would lead to massive economic benefits, including a quadrupling of industries like car manufacturing, steel, aluminum, lumber, and energy — all with “zero tariffs or taxes.”
“No more artificially drawn line from many years ago. Look how beautiful this land mass would be,” Trump added, reinforcing his vision of seamless integration.
Meanwhile, Canada is in the middle of a crucial election. Voters are deciding whether to grant interim Prime Minister Mark Carney — who took over from Justin Trudeau in March — a full four-year mandate or hand power to the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre.
According to CNN, polling stations opened early Monday morning in Newfoundland and Labrador, with voting underway across the country. While several parties are contesting, the main battle is between Carney’s Liberals and Poilievre’s Conservatives.
Carney ascended to the prime ministership after Trudeau resigned following dismal polling numbers and mounting political pressure.
Trump’s comments, although not official U.S. policy, could influence debates around Canadian sovereignty, cross-border trade, and future relations with the United States.
