Trump Touts ‘Big Progress’ With Putin, European Leaders To Join Zelenskyy For Washington Talks

WASHINGTON D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that “BIG PROGRESS” has been made with Russia, just a day after his three-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump offered no specific details but told followers to “STAY TUNED!”

The high-stakes summit, which marked the first time Putin was on Western soil since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, concluded without a concrete agreement to end the war. However, both leaders described their interaction in positive terms. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff later told CNN that Trump and Putin had agreed to “robust security guarantees” for Ukraine, which he called “game-changing.”

According to a Reuters report, the two leaders discussed a proposal for Russia to cede some occupied territories in exchange for Ukraine giving up a swathe of fortified land in the east and freezing the front lines. This proposal has been met with skepticism from European allies, as it goes against Ukraine’s stance of not ceding any territory.

The meeting’s aftermath has set the stage for a crucial meeting on Monday in Washington, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet with President Trump. He will be joined by a delegation of top European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also confirmed her attendance. The joint presence of these leaders is seen as an effort to present a united front and ensure that Ukraine’s interests are at the forefront of the discussions with the U.S. President.

The meeting comes as Trump presses Ukraine to accept a quick peace deal following his summit with Putin. Zelenskyy has stressed the importance of European involvement in any negotiations to ensure “reliable security guarantees.” Sources
