Washington, DC [US]: Former US President Donald Trump has announced that he will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday morning regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Tomorrow morning I will be speaking to President Putin concerning the War in Ukraine. Many elements of a Final Agreement have been agreed to, but much remains. Thousands of young soldiers, and others, are being killed. Each week brings 2,500 soldier deaths, from both sides, and it must end NOW. I look very much forward to the call with President Putin.”
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning to the White House after his weekend at Mar-a-Lago, Trump mentioned ongoing progress. “We’re doing pretty well, I think, with Russia. We’ll see if we have something to announce, maybe by Tuesday. I’ll be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday,” CNN reported.
“A lot of work’s been done over the weekend, we want to see if we can bring that war to an end,” Trump added. “Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance.”
He also stated that much of the groundwork for negotiations had already been discussed between both parties.
Last week, the Kremlin confirmed that US negotiators were set to visit Russia for further discussions, though no details about the participants were disclosed, as reported by CNN.
Trump’s upcoming conversation follows his recent claim that Ukraine had agreed to a US-proposed 30-day ceasefire. Ukraine reportedly expressed its readiness to accept the US plan for an “immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire,” which could be extended if both parties agree. The US also agreed to resume security assistance to Ukraine and lift the pause on intelligence sharing.
In response to Trump’s announcement, Putin stated that Russia agreed with the ceasefire proposal in principle but attached tough conditions and demanded concessions from Ukraine. He accused the Ukrainian government of being part of the “root cause” of the conflict.
On Friday, Putin expressed a willingness to improve US-Russia relations, stating that diplomatic ties were “practically reduced to zero, destroyed by the previous American administration.” Referring to Trump’s administration, he said, “Overall, the situation is starting to move. Let’s see what comes out of this.”
Notably, the Russia-Ukraine conflict has been ongoing since February 2022.
