Trump Stands Firm On August 1 Tariff Plan, Says He’s Open To Fair Trade Deals

Washington DC [US], July 8: US President Donald Trump on Monday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to imposing new tariffs, emphasizing that the move is about ensuring fairness in global trade. While standing firm on the proposed August 1 rollout, Trump noted he is open to negotiations if countries come forward with equitable alternatives.

“We’re always open to negotiations when something is fair,” Trump stated during a press briefing. “Most countries have had their way for many decades. This is about fairness. It’s a small token compared to the damage done over the years—but no other president was willing to take this step. I did it.”

Trump expressed confidence that his second term would surpass his first in economic impact through tariff enforcement. He claimed that during his first term, the US collected hundreds of billions in tariffs, particularly from China, without triggering inflation.

“The first term was financially the most successful time for the country. But I believe this time will be even better,” Trump said. “We’ve already taken in over a hundred billion dollars’ worth of tariffs—and we haven’t even started.”

When asked about the August 1 deadline for implementing reciprocal tariffs on 14 countries, Trump confirmed letters had already been sent but indicated a slight openness to flexibility.

“I’d say firm—but not 100% firm,” he said. “If they call and offer a fair alternative, we’ll be open to that.”

Trump also hinted that some countries had grown “spoilt” by years of one-sided trade deals but left the door open for dialogue. “Some want to make it real and fair. Others have taken advantage for too long,” he added.

The announcement underscores the Trump administration’s continued focus on trade reform, signaling a tough stance ahead while still leaving room for diplomatic negotiations.
