Washington, D.C. [USA]: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that his administration is actively working to finalize a deal that would keep TikTok operational in the United States. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he would sign an Executive Order to extend TikTok’s operations for an additional 75 days, giving more time to secure necessary approvals.
“My administration has been working very hard on a deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress. The deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days,” Trump wrote.
He also emphasized the importance of ongoing negotiations with China, referencing recent tensions over reciprocal tariffs, which he defended as essential to national security and economic fairness.
“We hope to continue working in good faith with China, who I understand are not very happy about our reciprocal tariffs (Necessary for fair and balanced trade between China and the USA!). This proves that tariffs are the most powerful economic tool and very important to our national security! We do not want TikTok to ‘go dark.’ We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the Deal. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” the post added.
The announcement comes just one day before a proposed ban on TikTok was set to take effect. According to CNN, Trump had already delayed the enforcement of the ban by 75 days when he took office in January, in an attempt to strike a deal that would preserve the app’s availability in the U.S.
The roots of this issue trace back to last year, when President Joe Biden signed a law mandating that ByteDance, TikTok’s China-based parent company, either sell the platform or face a full ban in the United States over national security concerns.
In response to the recent developments, a ByteDance spokesperson said:
“ByteDance has been in discussion with the US government regarding a potential solution for TikTok US. An agreement has not been executed. There are key matters to be resolved. Any agreement will be subject to approval under Chinese law,” CNN reported.
