Washington: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would not attend an emergency meeting of G7 nations to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, an idea that had earlier been floated by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Trump made the remarks during a White House briefing after being asked about a “private message” from Macron suggesting an emergency G7 gathering in Paris. The message had been shared by Trump earlier in the day on his Truth Social platform.
However, Macron later clarified that no such emergency G7 meeting would take place this week, effectively cooling speculation around the proposal.
When reporters asked whether he would be open to attending such a meeting if it were organised, Trump responded bluntly:
“No, I wouldn’t do that.”
The brief exchange highlights ongoing differences among Western leaders on diplomatic engagement over the Ukraine conflict, even as discussions continue over possible pathways to de-escalation and peace.
