Trump Says He Cancelled Second Wave of Attacks on Venezuela After Prisoner Releases

US President Donald Trump on Friday claimed that he cancelled a previously planned second wave of military attacks on Venezuela after the country began releasing a large number of political prisoners, calling it a sign of cooperation and a move towards peace.

In a post on his social media platform Truth, Trump said Venezuela’s actions demonstrated goodwill. “Venezuela is releasing large numbers of political prisoners as a sign of ‘seeking peace’. This is a very important and smart gesture. The USA and Venezuela are working well together. Because of this cooperation, I have cancelled the previously expected second wave of attacks,” he wrote.

Trump also highlighted potential economic engagement between the two countries, stating that at least $100 billion would be invested by major oil companies. “At least 100 Billion Dollars will be invested by BIG OIL, all of whom I will be meeting with today at The White House,” he added.

Venezuela on Thursday released several high-profile opposition leaders, activists and journalists, describing the move as an effort to de-escalate tensions and pursue peace. The development came less than a week after former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was reportedly captured by US forces to face drug-trafficking charges.

Speaking separately in an interview with Fox News, Trump praised the government led by acting President Delcy Rodríguez, saying it had been cooperative. “They’ve been great. Everything we’ve wanted, they’ve given us,” he said.

The announcement signals a pause in further military action amid heightened tensions, while diplomatic and economic discussions between Washington and Caracas appear to be underway.
