Trump Connects Tariffs to Ceasefire Between India and Pakistan
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has once again said that his direct involvement stopped India and Pakistan from going to war earlier this year. This time, he said that the “power of tariffs” was the reason the two nuclear-armed countries agreed to a ceasefire.
The President said on Monday from the White House that tariffs were an important instrument for keeping the peace across the world.
He said, “If I didn’t have the power of tariffs, you would have at least four of the seven wars going on.” He said, “If you look at India and Pakistan, they were ready to fight.” This was in reference to the battle in South Asia. There were seven planes that were shot down.
Trump said that using tariffs not only helped the US make money, but it also helped keep the world stable. “I don’t want to say precisely what I said, but what I said worked really well… He said, “We made hundreds of billions of dollars and we’re a peacekeeper because of tariffs,” and he also claimed to have helped end the India-Pakistan war.
The Conflict’s Background and Counterclaims
In May, India started Operation Sindoor to attack terrorist sites in Pakistan. This led to a military clash between the two border countries. This happened after 26 victims were killed in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam. On May 10th, a truce was finally announced.
India has always said that the decision to stop fighting was made by both sides, and it has denied Trump’s repeated assertions that it played a role in the conflict.
Trump made a similar assertion last week, saying that he told both countries that he would “snap any trade relations” if the situation didn’t end. “India and Pakistan were fighting. I called both of them… They had just taken down seven planes… I told them that if they did this, there would be no trade, and I stopped the conflict. Trump had added, “It was raging for four days.”
Alleged Praise from the Chief of the Pakistani Military
Trump also talked about a recent conversation he had with Asim Munir, the head of Pakistan’s military, and Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan. He said Munir commended him for helping to make the truce happen.
Munir told a group of people, “This man (Trump) saved millions of lives because he stopped the war.” That conflict was going to be very nasty… I loved how he said it.
