Trump Optimistic About “Very Good” Trade Deal With China Despite Steep US Tariffs

Washington DC [US]: US President Donald Trump on Thursday expressed optimism over reaching a “very good” trade deal with China, even as the United States imposed steep tariffs of up to 245 percent on Chinese imports in response to Beijing’s retaliatory trade actions.

“We’re going to make a deal. I think we’re going to make a very good deal with China,”
Trump said, as reported by The Hill.

He also stated that the U.S. would likely face “very little problem making a deal with Europe or anybody else.”

Trump’s remarks came during the visit of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to the White House. He also mentioned confidence in securing a trade agreement with the European Union before the expiration of the 90-day moratorium on reciprocal tariffs.

A White House fact sheet revealed that China’s retaliatory measures have led to tariffs of up to 245 percent on goods imported into the US. This marks a significant increase from the previous 145 percent tariff rate on Chinese exports.

In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian commented during a press briefing:

“They should ask the US side for the specific tax rate figures.”

Lin reiterated China’s stance on the tariff dispute:

“The tariff war was initiated by the US,”
“Beijing has taken countermeasures to protect its legitimate rights and interests and international fairness and justice,” describing China’s actions as “reasonable and legal.”

He also warned against the futility of trade conflicts:

“Tariffs and trade wars have no winner.”
“China does not want to fight these wars, but is not scared of them,” he stated, reaffirming China’s willingness to collaborate and “remove barriers.”
