Washington D.C.: As tensions escalate between Iran and the West over Tehran’s rapidly advancing uranium enrichment programme, US President Donald Trump has expressed openness to renewed diplomatic engagement — but also warned that continued defiance by Iran’s leadership could justify action by its own citizens.
Speaking on Fox News, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated the president’s preference for diplomacy but offered a stark remark aimed at the Iranian regime.
“If the Iranian regime refuses to come to a peaceful diplomatic solution — which the president is still interested and engaging in, by the way — why shouldn’t the Iranian people take away the power of this incredibly violent regime that has been suppressing them for decades?” Leavitt said.
⚠️ Rising Nuclear Tensions
The statement comes at a time of heightened anxiety among global powers. Iran’s expansion of uranium enrichment is once again fuelling concerns over potential nuclear weapons development, in violation of previous commitments.
Trump has long taken a hardline stance on Iran, famously pulling the US out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) during his previous term and reimposing tough sanctions on Tehran. His administration has since ramped up pressure on Iran while keeping the door for diplomacy open — albeit with warnings.
🕊️ Diplomacy with Conditions
Despite strong rhetoric, the White House insists President Trump remains open to a negotiated outcome, so long as Iran shows a willingness to engage constructively.
“The president continues to seek peace, but he will not tolerate deception or aggression — either toward the United States or our allies,” Leavitt added.
🌍 What’s at Stake?
Iran’s nuclear advancements have drawn renewed concern from not only the United States but also Europe and regional powers. Observers warn that failure to revive diplomatic channels could tip the situation toward unpredictable regional fallout, especially after recent US and Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites
