US President Donald Trump on Sunday (local time) expressed sadness over the recent cancer diagnosis of former President Joe Biden, extending heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote:
“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”
The massage comes after Biden’s office confirmed that the 82-year-old former president has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, which has already spread to his bones.
The diagnosis was made following the discovery of a prostate nodule, after Biden reported worsening urinary symptoms. Medical evaluations revealed a high-grade prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) — an indicator of advanced and aggressive disease. Despite the severity, the cancer is reportedly hormone-sensitive, which allows for potentially effective treatment.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management,” the statement from Biden’s office noted.
The two political rivals, who faced off in both the 2020 and 2024 presidential elections, have had a contentious relationship. Trump, who recently returned to the White House after defeating Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in 2024, has often mocked Biden with nicknames such as “Sleepy Joe.” Yet, his recent comments reflect a rare moment of bipartisan empathy, highlighting the human side of political leadership amid serious health challenges.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who succeeded Biden as the Democratic standard-bearer in 2024, also voiced her support following the news.
In a post on X, Harris wrote:
“Doug and I are saddened to learn of President Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis. We are keeping him, Dr. Biden, and their entire family in our hearts and prayers during this time.”
She added:
“Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.”
Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his physicians. The outpouring of support from across the political spectrum underscores the gravity of his diagnosis and the broad respect he commands despite political divisions.
