US President Donald Trump delivered a special address at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Wednesday (January 21), where he once again claimed credit for ending eight global conflicts, including the long-running Armenia-Azerbaijan war.
However, while Trump used the lengthy speech to highlight what he described as major diplomatic victories, his remarks quickly came under scrutiny after multiple verbal missteps, which went viral on social media within hours.
‘Aber-Bajan’: Trump’s Azerbaijan Slip Goes Viral
During the speech, Trump mispronounced Azerbaijan, referring to the country as “Aber-bajan,” drawing widespread attention online.
“I settled eight other wars. India-Pakistan, I settled other wars that were… Vladimir Putin called me, Armenia, Aber-bajan (Azerbaijan),” Trump said, according to clips shared widely on social media platforms.
The moment was immediately picked up by users, who began circulating memes and jokes about the pronunciation error.
Greenland Confused With Iceland During NATO Remarks
Trump also appeared to confuse Greenland with Iceland while discussing NATO and global markets during the same address.
“I don’t know that they’d [NATO] be there for us. They’re not there for us on Iceland, that I can tell you. I mean, our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland. So Iceland’s already cost us a lot of money,” Trump said.
The comment came amid heightened global attention on Trump’s Greenland strategy, adding to the confusion and online debate over the remarks.
Trump’s Claims of Brokering Peace Deals
Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for mediating peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, pointing to a White House-brokered deal in August last year, where leaders of both nations agreed to end decades of hostilities and expand ties with Washington.
While the agreement was widely reported, Trump’s repeated mix-ups involving the two countries have often overshadowed the diplomatic effort in public discourse.
Social Media Reacts With Memes and Jokes
As the Davos video spread online, users were quick to poke fun at the US president.
“To be fair, some common words are really tricky and tongue twisters to some people. I am a victim of the same too,” one user wrote.
Another joked: “Aberbaijan has finished war with Albany. Thanks to Trump.”
A third quipped: “Few months ago, this same guy said he ended the war between Albania and Azerbaijan. Today he discovered a new country.”
Not the First Time: Past Mix-Ups Resurface
This is not the first instance of Trump confusing countries in the region. In September 2025, he mistakenly referred to Armenia as Albania while discussing his foreign policy achievements.
“I solved wars that were unsolvable. Azerbaijan and Albania, it was going on for many, many years,” Trump said during a Fox News interview at the time.
During a separate joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump also stated: “We settled Aber-baijan and Albania.”
Focus Shifts From Diplomacy to Delivery
While Trump continues to highlight his role in resolving international conflicts, his verbal slips at high-profile global events such as Davos have repeatedly drawn attention away from policy claims and towards moments of unintended humour, especially on social media.
