Donald Trump has indicated that the decision to launch military strikes against Iran was strongly influenced by his Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, as the conflict between the two nations entered its fourth week.
Speaking at a public event in Tennessee, Trump revealed that Hegseth was among the first senior officials to advocate military action, warning that Iran should not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. Trump recalled discussions with multiple top officials, including military leaders, before authorising the strikes.
The remarks come amid growing scrutiny in Washington over how the decision to go to war was made. Reports suggest internal divisions within the administration, with some leaders supporting immediate action while others advised caution.
The conflict, which began with US strikes in late February, has since escalated into a broader regional war involving Iran and its allies. Casualties have risen significantly, with thousands reported dead across multiple countries.
Despite the ongoing military operations, Trump has indicated that diplomatic options are still being explored. He recently extended a deadline for Iran to meet US demands, signalling a possible window for negotiations even as tensions remain high.
