Former US President Donald Trump has confirmed that tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China will go into effect as planned on March 4, leaving “no room left” for negotiations.
When asked about the possibility of a deal, Trump stated, “No room left for Mexico or for Canada. No, the tariffs, you know, they’re all set. They go into effect tomorrow,” during his investment announcement on Monday.
In early February, Trump announced 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with an additional 10% on Chinese goods. However, on February 4, he temporarily paused the tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days, citing new commitments from both nations to enhance border security.
Trump also addressed American farmers in a post on Truth Social, saying, “To the Great Farmers of the United States: Get ready to start making a lot of agricultural product to be sold INSIDE of the United States. Tariffs will go on the external product on April 2nd. Have fun!”
Last month, Trump cited illicit drug smuggling from Canada and Mexico, particularly Fentanyl, as a reason for continuing with the tariffs. He claimed that drugs from China are being trafficked through the borders, contributing to the opioid crisis in the US.
“Drugs are still pouring into our Country from Mexico and Canada at very high and unacceptable levels… More than 100,000 people died last year due to the distribution of these dangerous and highly addictive POISONS,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He further stated that unless drug smuggling is “stopped or seriously limited,” the proposed tariffs “will, indeed, go into effect as scheduled.”
Along with the tariffs on Canada and Mexico, China will also face an additional 10% tariff from March 4.
“China will likewise be charged an additional 10 per cent Tariff on that date. The April Second Reciprocal Tariff date will remain in full force and effect. Thank you for your attention to this matter. GOD BLESS AMERICA!” Trump added.
