Donald Trump has said again that Ilhan Omar, a Democratic representative, married her brother to get U.S. citizenship. A post on Truth Social on Thursday made this claim, which has been extensively proven to be false. This happened after the House of Representatives voted against a resolution to condemn Omar.
The Censure Attempt and Trump’s Claim
The House of Representatives voted 214-213 to put off a proposal from South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace that would have censured Omar for what she said about the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. After the vote, Mace said that Omar should be sent back to Somalia, where she was born. Omar, who became a U.S. citizen in 2000, commented on X by saying that Mace was “pushing a false narrative to raise money” and help her run for governor. Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic Leader, also spoke out against the move, saying it showed that civility was going down in the Republican-controlled House.
President Trump took the chance to attack Omar personally in a post on Truth Social. He started by talking about Somalia’s difficulties, such poverty, corruption, and bloodshed. Then he switched to his long-standing, unproven claim. “Wasn’t she the one who married her brother to get citizenship?” he added, finishing his message with the word “SCUM.”
The Brother-Husband Story
Years ago, people started saying that Ilhan Omar married her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. It says she did this to help him become a U.S. citizen, which would be immigration and marriage fraud. Omar has always and strongly disputed these claims. While serving in the Minnesota State House in 2016, she said the allegation was “absolutely false and ridiculous” and gave a lengthy history of her marriages to back up her claim. Her political opponents and the media keep bringing up the issue, even though she has denied it and there is no solid evidence to support it.
