Washington, D.C. [US]: Amid escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that both nations have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire.”
President Trump, crediting U.S. mediation for the breakthrough, shared the development on Truth Social, his official platform.
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump posted.
The announcement was echoed by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who stated,
“Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The ceasefire comes after several days of military engagement between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, involving cross-border shelling, drone strikes, and retaliatory air raids.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the administration’s active diplomatic role. She highlighted that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been in sustained communication with leaders from both countries.
“The President wants to see this de-escalate as quickly as possible,” Leavitt said.
She added, “These are two countries that have been at odds with one another for decades, long before President Trump was in office. However, he has good relationships with the leaders of both countries. Secretary Rubio has been in constant contact with them to bring this conflict to an end.”
Asked if President Trump would personally speak with Indian and Pakistani leaders, Leavitt responded,
“If and when that happens, we will certainly let you know.”
Earlier in the day, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri addressed a press conference in New Delhi, describing Pakistan’s actions as “escalatory and provocative.” Misri presented evidence of aggression from the Pakistani side and countered what he called “false narratives” emerging from Islamabad.
Despite the announcement of a ceasefire, the international community is expected to monitor the situation closely to ensure both sides adhere to the agreement and de-escalation efforts remain on track.
