Trump And Starmer Disagree On Palestinian Statehood But Find Common Ground On Peace

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday revealed a rare point of disagreement with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer about the recognition of Palestine as a state. The two presidents spoke after a bilateral meeting at Chequers, near Aylesbury, UK.

During a press meeting, Trump said, “I disagree with the prime minister on that point, which is one of our few disagreements.”

Even though they disagree on this point, Prime Minister Starmer made it clear that he and the President of the United States “absolutely agree” that a peace roadmap is needed for the region. Starmer stated, “We completely agree on the need for peace and a plan, because the situation in Gaza is unacceptable.” He made his point even clearer by saying that Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, should not be involved in any future government of Palestine.

The conversation shows how complicated international diplomacy is on this issue, where friends may agree on big goals like peace but disagree on the best ways to achieve them.
