Trudeau Vows “Forceful But Reasonable” Response To US Tariff Threat

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Canada’s response will be “forceful but reasonable” if the United States imposes a 25% tariff, as threatened by President Donald Trump, The Globe and Mail reported.

Trump has warned that tariffs on Canada and Mexico could be imposed as early as Saturday.

“If the president does choose to implement any tariffs against Canada, we’re ready with a response — a purposeful, forceful but reasonable, immediate response,” Trudeau said before a meeting with his advisory council on Canada-US relations.

On Thursday, Trump reiterated his stance, saying the tariffs were imminent, though he had not yet decided if Canadian oil would be included.

Trudeau warned that these tariffs would not only harm Canada but also negatively impact the US economy and the security of both nations. He emphasized that trade with Canada benefits US prosperity and security, highlighting Canada’s steel, aluminum, critical minerals, clean energy, and democratic values.

“If the tariffs are implemented against Canada, we will respond. We won’t relent until tariffs are removed and, of course, everything is on the table,” Trudeau asserted.

According to The Hill, Trump remains firm on his decision, citing the US trade deficit with Canada and Mexico as a key reason.

“We’ll be announcing the tariffs on Canada and Mexico for a number of reasons. I’ll be putting the tariff of 25 percent on Canada and Mexico, and we will really have to do that because we have very big deficits with those countries,” Trump said on Thursday.
