Tropical Cyclones Senyar and Ditwah Cause Over 1,000 Deaths Across Southeast Asia

A series of tropical cyclones, notably the rare Cyclone Senyar and the powerful Cyclone Ditwah, coinciding with the northeast monsoon, have caused catastrophic flooding, landslides, and over 1,000 fatalities across Southeast Asia, with Indonesia and Sri Lanka being the hardest hit.

🇮🇩 Indonesia: Cyclone Senyar’s Rare Devastation

The week-long heavy rains, intensified by the rare formation of Cyclone Senyar in the Strait of Malacca, have caused devastating impact, particularly on the island of Sumatra.

  • Fatalities: At least 502 deaths have been recorded in Sumatra.
  • Missing Persons: Approximately 508 persons remain missing (according to an AFP tally cited by the national disaster agency on Monday).
  • Logistical Challenges: Damage to roads and the communication network has significantly complicated rescue and relief efforts, forcing authorities to use helicopters and navy ships for supply deliveries to cut-off villages.
  • Storm Status: Senyar, which circled the Strait of Malacca last week, has since dissipated over the South China Sea. Senyar was the first tropical cyclone to form in the Strait of Malacca since Typhoon Vamei in 2001.

🇱🇰 Sri Lanka: Cyclone Ditwah’s Catastrophe

Cyclone Ditwah caused massive devastation as it tracked across the island, marking the country’s “largest and most challenging natural disaster” in 20 years.

  • Fatalities: At least 334 people have been confirmed killed.
  • Missing Persons: Nearly 370 people remain missing.
  • Displacement: About 20,000 homes have been destroyed, and over 100,000 people have been moved to government shelters.
  • Worst-Hit Districts: The worst-affected districts in the central region include Kandy (88 deaths, 150 missing), Badulla (71 deaths), and Nuwara Eliya (68 deaths).
  • Economic Impact: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake promised to set up a fund to repair the damage, noting that every sector, from small self-employed workers to major industrialists and farmers, has been severely impacted.

🇹🇭 Thailand and 🇮🇳 India

  • Thailand: Floods unleashed by the torrential rains in the southern part of the country killed at least 176 people and affected more than two million households. Krungsri Research estimates the total economic losses at 23.6 billion baht ($734 million), with major impacts on the tourism and agricultural (rubber and palm oil) sectors.
  • India: Three people died in rain-related incidents triggered by Cyclone Ditwah in Tamil Nadu. The state also reported the death of nearly 150 cattle and damage to 57,000 hectares of farmland in the delta districts.
