Washington DC [US], April 7 : The upcoming Tribeca Festival in New York will kick off with the world premiere of HBO’s highly anticipated two-part documentary on Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Billy Joel, titled Billy Joel: So It Goes, according to Deadline.
The announcement was made by festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal during an appearance at the NAB Show in Las Vegas on Sunday. In her statement, Rosenthal expressed her excitement: “For nearly 25 years, the Tribeca Festival has celebrated the artists who give New York its heart and soul, and on the opening night of the 2025 festival, we are thrilled to honor Billy Joel—an artist who has embodied that very spirit.” She continued, “Paying tribute to the legendary performer who captured the essence of a ‘New York State of Mind’ is a perfect way to kick off this year’s celebration of creativity and inspiration.”
Billy Joel, 75, recently concluded a successful 10-year residency at Madison Square Garden, which featured monthly sold-out shows. However, he postponed a planned tour due to an unspecified health issue, as reported by Deadline.
The documentary delves into Joel’s life and music, exploring themes of love, loss, and personal struggles that have influenced his songwriting. Directed and produced by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, the project features extensive one-on-one interviews, along with exclusive access to never-before-seen performances, home movies, and personal photographs.
Billy Joel: So It Goes is set to air on HBO and stream on Max this summer, following its premiere at the Tribeca Festival. The festival’s opening night will take place on June 4 at the Beacon Theatre, and it will run through June 15. Additional programming, including film, music, TV, audio storytelling, talks, games, and immersive media, will be announced in the coming weeks.
