Tragic Bus Accident In Himachal Pradesh Claims Five Lives, Over 20 Injured Amidst Monsoon Fury

Mandi, Himachal Pradesh – July 24, 2025 – At least five people, including three women and two men, were killed today after a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus plunged into a deep gorge near the Maseran area of Sarkaghat, approximately 60 kilometers from Mandi town. The tragic accident occurred as the state continues to battle the relentless monsoon fury.

Mandi Superintendent of Police Sakshi Verma confirmed the fatalities and stated that around 20 people sustained injuries in the mishap. All injured passengers are currently receiving treatment at Sarkaghat hospital, with several reported to be in critical condition.

Preliminary information suggests the bus was carrying approximately 20 to 25 passengers at the time of the incident. Police and local administration swiftly launched rescue and relief operations, with efforts ongoing to provide assistance and care for those affected. The exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined, and further details are awaited as investigations continue.

This tragic accident adds to the growing casualty count in Himachal Pradesh, which has been severely impacted by continuous heavy rainfall and associated natural calamities. The unrelenting monsoon fury has pushed the state into a significant crisis, causing widespread disruption and loss of life.

According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), the total death toll due to monsoon-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh has now climbed to 137. This grim figure includes 77 deaths directly attributed to rain-related incidents such such as landslides, house collapses, and flash floods. An additional 60 fatalities have resulted from road accidents, often exacerbated by the challenging and adverse weather conditions that have made roads treacherous.

Across affected districts, extensive restoration efforts are underway to clear debris, repair damaged infrastructure, and restore essential services. While some areas have seen improvements in conditions, fresh disruptions continue to be reported, highlighting the extreme vulnerability of infrastructure during these intense weather events.

Authorities have issued stern advisories, urging citizens to avoid non-essential travel, especially in high-risk zones prone to landslides and flash floods. The public is also strongly advised to adhere to all safety warnings and advisories issued by local administrations. Disaster response teams are maintaining a close watch on the evolving situation, ready to respond to further emergencies.
