A somber cloud has settled over Jammu and Kashmir today following a devastating road accident in the Doda district that claimed the lives of 10 Indian Army soldiers. The incident occurred at the treacherous Khanni Top stretch along the Bhaderwah-Chamba interstate road, a high-altitude route known for its difficult terrain.
The accident involved a bullet-proof Army vehicle transporting 17 personnel toward a forward post when the driver reportedly lost control, leading the vehicle to plummet into a 200-foot-deep gorge.
The Rescue Mission
Following the plunge, a swift joint rescue operation was launched by the Indian Army and local police.
- Casualties: While four soldiers were tragically found dead at the immediate site, the death toll later rose to ten as confirmed by officials.
- The Injured: Ten other soldiers sustained injuries in the fall. In a race against time, the most critically wounded were airlifted to the Military Hospital in Udhampur for specialized trauma care.
- The Terrain: The 200-foot drop made the initial extraction of personnel extremely challenging for the first responders.
National Solidarity and Official Response
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha took to social media to express the nation’s grief and honor the fallen.
“Deeply saddened at the loss of lives of 10 of our brave Indian Army soldiers… We will always remember the outstanding service and supreme sacrifice of our brave soldiers,” Sinha stated.
The LG has directed senior officials to ensure that the survivors receive the best possible medical treatment, emphasizing that the entire country stands in solidarity with the grieving families.
A Pattern of Peril
This tragedy follows a recent string of incidents in the region’s high-altitude zones. Just weeks ago, two Army porters lost their lives after slipping into a gorge in the Gulmarg sector near the Line of Control. These recurring accidents highlight the extreme risks and grueling conditions the Indian Armed Forces face daily while navigating the volatile and rugged geography of Jammu and Kashmir.
