Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India]: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has voiced concerns about the upcoming delimitation of parliamentary constituencies, scheduled for 2026, warning that it could significantly reduce the state’s representation in Parliament. Speaking at an all-party meeting called to discuss the issue, Stalin emphasized the threat posed by the Union Government’s proposed delimitation process, which is generally based on population figures. Notably, the Tamil Nadu BJP did not attend the meeting.
Threat to Southern States’ Representation
Stalin described the proposed delimitation as a “sword hanging above the heads of southern states,” arguing that Tamil Nadu’s success in controlling its population through family planning and women empowerment could backfire by leading to a loss of parliamentary seats.
“If the present 543 seats continue due to less population, there is a possibility of reducing our Parliament constituencies. Tamil Nadu could lose 8 seats. There won’t be 39 MPs for Tamil Nadu, only 32 MPs would be there,” Stalin warned.
Impact of Increasing Total Parliamentary Seats
Stalin further explained that if the total number of Parliament constituencies is increased to 848, Tamil Nadu would gain 22 additional constituencies. However, if the delimitation is done solely based on population figures, the state would gain only 10 more seats, resulting in a net loss of 12 seats.
“In both models, Tamil Nadu’s representation would decrease. More populated states will get more MPs,” Stalin noted, urging for a fair approach in the delimitation process.
DMK’s Concerns and Criticism of BJP
DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai criticized the BJP-led Union Government, alleging that it plans to use the delimitation process to disadvantage southern states. He accused the BJP of having a “devious intent” to catch opponents by surprise.
“MK Stalin has picked up on the devious intent of the BJP government to silently move and catch everybody with surprise (with delimitation). The states which scrupulously followed population control measures are now at a disadvantage,” Annadurai stated. He also accused the BJP of lacking credibility regarding its promises.
Actor Vijay’s Party Warns of Unfair Delimitation
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVKK), led by actor Vijay, also criticized the potential delimitation process based on population figures. The party warned that such a move could reduce representation for southern states and emphasized the need to address immediate issues like inflation and unemployment instead.
According to the party, the 84th Constitutional Amendment had frozen the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies until 2026. However, with the freeze set to end, the Union Government is expected to initiate the process. TVKK expressed concern that no clear explanation or assurance has been provided to the states about how the restructuring will occur.
