Washington [US]: The Italian Cinema Academy announced on Friday that Timothee Chalamet, the U.S. actor known for his roles in Dune and A Complete Unknown, will be honored with an honorary David Award for “cinematic excellence” at this year’s David di Donatello Awards in Rome, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Timothee Chalamet’s European origins and American background make him one of the most unpredictable and talented protagonists of international cinema today, capable of being both an auteur performer and a star generating trends and styles,” said Piera Detassis, president of the Italian Cinema Academy, in a statement.
“The Academy is delighted to award him the David for Cinematic Excellence, which is meant to be an acknowledgment of the great actor of quality and innovative films, and, at the same time, of the global protagonist.”
Detassis also highlighted Chalamet’s international breakthrough, which came through his role in the Italian film Call Me by Your Name, directed by Luca Guadagnino, one of Italy’s most internationally renowned filmmakers.
Chalamet’s relationship with Italy remains strong, with the actor attending the Venice Film Festival for the premiere of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 1 in 2021, and again in 2022 for the horror-romance Bones and All, directed by Guadagnino and co-starring Taylor Russell. At both events, he was met with enthusiastic crowds of fans who cheered wildly along the red carpet.
