Timothée Chalamet Faces Backlash From Opera, Ballet Worlds

Hollywood star Timothée Chalamet has ignited a firestorm within the global performing arts community following dismissive comments about the relevance of opera and ballet. The remarks, made during an event with Matthew McConaughey, have led to a viral backlash dubbed #OperaGate on social media.

While discussing the struggle to keep cinema culturally relevant, the 30-year-old actor stated:

“I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey! Keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.’ All respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I’m taking shots for no reason.”

The Arts World Responds

Major cultural institutions and renowned artists were quick to challenge Chalamet’s assessment of their “extinction”:

  • The Royal Ballet & Opera (UK): Issued a statement emphasizing that these art forms do not exist in isolation and continue to “inform, inspire, and elevate” every other medium, from film to fashion.
  • The Metropolitan Opera (NYC): Posted a behind-the-scenes video showcasing the immense craftsmanship involved in their productions with the pointed caption: “This one’s for you, @tchalamet.”
  • Isabel Leonard (Opera Singer): The three-time Grammy winner called Chalamet “narrow-minded” and “ineloquent,” arguing that taking cheap shots at fellow artists reflects poorly on his character.
  • Sara Mearns (NYCB Principal): Challenged the actor to “get in the studio” and create something that stands the test of time, notably referencing Chalamet’s own mother, Nicole Flender, who was a professional ballet dancer.

The “Marty Supreme” Factor

The controversy comes at a sensitive time for Chalamet, who is a frontrunner for the Best Actor Oscar for his role as a 1950s table tennis pro in Marty Supreme. Interestingly, the Paris Opera used this against him, sharing a clip of a ping-pong scene from the opera Nixon in China with the caption: “Plot twist: Ping-pong also exists in opera.”

While some theaters, like the Seattle Opera, have playfully leaned into the buzz by offering a “TIMOTHEE” promo code for 14% off tickets, critics suggest the gaffe could impact his Academy Award campaign as voting reaches its final stages.
