2007 T20 World Cup hero Joginder Sharma says the time may have come for MS Dhoni to step away from the IPL after Chennai Super Kings crash out of playoff race.
Diu (Daman and Diu), May 20 – As speculations intensify around MS Dhoni’s future in the Indian Premier League, former India cricketer and 2007 T20 World Cup final hero Joginder Sharma has weighed in, suggesting that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend should consider calling time on his storied IPL career.
“Considering Mahi’s fitness level, he should play up to prove his fitness, but I believe it is time for him to rest,” Joginder told ANI in a candid statement that has added further fuel to the retirement buzz surrounding one of India’s most beloved cricketing icons.
Dhoni’s Future in Focus After CSK’s Exit
The 18th season of the IPL proved a disappointing one for CSK, who failed to qualify for the playoffs—a rare occurrence for the five-time champions who have made 12 previous playoff appearances. After captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to injury, Dhoni stepped in to lead the side once again. Despite his trademark calm presence and finishing cameos, the Super Kings looked far from their formidable best.
At 43, Dhoni’s form and fitness have become hot topics of discussion. The former India captain, who has played more than 400 T20 matches and holds the record for most wins as an IPL captain, was seen batting lower down the order this season. CSK coach Stephen Fleming even admitted that Dhoni is no longer able to bat for extended periods: “He can’t bat for 10 overs running full stick,” Fleming had said.
These changes, coupled with the presence of Dhoni’s family at CSK’s home game in Chepauk last month, led to widespread speculation that IPL 2025 may have been Dhoni’s last dance.
Dhoni Hints at Decision Timeline
Earlier this month, Dhoni himself addressed the retirement rumours, saying he would take a few months to assess his physical condition before deciding his future in the IPL.
“After this IPL gets over, I have to work hard for another 6-8 months to see if my body can take this pressure. Nothing to decide now, but the love and affection I have seen is excellent,” he had said during a post-match presentation.
A Season of Milestones
Even though the season ended on a sour note for CSK, Dhoni continued to break records. He became the oldest player to win a Player of the Match award in IPL history and joined the elite list of players to feature in 400 T20 matches.
His reflexes behind the stumps remained razor-sharp, while his short but impactful innings reminded fans of his enduring finishing ability. However, the long-term toll on his body—especially following a knee surgery last year—has clearly taken its toll.
CSK’s Legacy Under Dhoni
Under Dhoni’s leadership, CSK won five IPL titles and became one of the most consistent and celebrated franchises in T20 cricket. He has been the heart and soul of the franchise since its inception, known for building teams, backing players, and inspiring loyalty across generations.
As CSK prepare to rebuild, the franchise—and its fans—may soon have to envision life without their “Thala.”
