Player of the Match Tilak Varma shares insights on his conversation with Ravi Bishnoi and the game plan that led to India’s two-wicket win over England.
Chennai, January 26: After a stunning match-winning performance, Tilak Varma revealed the pivotal conversation with Ravi Bishnoi that made India’s chase against England smoother in the second T20I.
Chasing 166, India’s innings became nerve-wracking as debutant Brydon Carse and England’s bowling unit put the hosts under immense pressure. With Tilak holding one end, the equation came down to 20 runs needed off the last three overs.
Tilak’s Crucial Advice to Bishnoi
In a tense moment, Tilak advised Bishnoi to focus on holding his shape and finding gaps, which proved vital. Bishnoi responded with a flick for four off Brydon Carse and later edged Liam Livingstone for another boundary, easing the pressure.
“I told him (Bishnoi) to hold his shape and hit the gap. He played a flick and hit a four off Livingstone, which made it a bit easier,” Tilak shared after being named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 72 off 55 balls.
Game Plan with Coach Gautam Gambhir
Tilak credited head coach Gautam Gambhir for shaping the game plan and keeping the players focused. “The wicket was slightly two-paced. Gautam sir told me to play according to the situation—take charge when the team needs runs or stand till the end,” he explained.
Preparedness for Pace Threats
Facing the fiery pace of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood was no easy feat, but India’s batters showcased confidence, owing to rigorous practice sessions.
“The team discussed that a left-right combination would be a good option to unsettle their bowlers. We’ve played in South Africa against quicker bowlers. Archer and Wood are quick, but we prepared well, worked hard in the nets, and got the results,” Tilak added.
Team Effort Leads to Victory
Tilak’s innings and Bishnoi’s contributions demonstrated India’s depth and resilience under pressure. With this thrilling two-wicket victory, India takes a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, with three games remaining.
The next T20I promises to continue this electrifying contest as both teams push for supremacy in the series.
