Tibetans In Exile Observe Losar With Solemn Prayers Amid Earthquake Tragedy

Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh) [India]: Tibetans in exile are marking Losar, the Tibetan New Year, welcoming the Wood Snake Year 2152 while bidding farewell to the Dragon Wood Year 2151.

The Tibetan government-in-exile’s Religion and Culture Department organized special prayers at Tsuglagkhang, the main Tibetan temple in Dharamshala on Friday morning to commemorate the occasion.

Members of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, ministers, government staff, and Tibetan residents gathered at the temple, where monks from the Namgyal Monastery led traditional prayers and worshiped their official deity, Palden Lhamo.

Losar Marked with Simplicity Amid Earthquake Loss

While Losar is traditionally a three-day festival filled with celebrations, this year’s observance remains subdued due to the recent earthquake in Tibet that claimed numerous lives. Only essential rituals and prayers were performed in solidarity with those affected.

Dolma Tsering, Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, told ANI:
“There isn’t much of a celebration because of the earthquake and the many Tibetans who lost their lives. This year, it is mostly a religious affair with prayers. There are no dances or performances as we stand in solidarity with those who suffered. We are also praying for peace and harmony worldwide, given the ongoing atrocities.”

Chimi Rigden, Private Secretary to the Dalai Lama, added:
“It is Losar today, and we are celebrating it in a traditional way. Over the last two days, we’ve had a lot of rain, which we take as a good omen for the year ahead. However, the tragic earthquake has deeply saddened us. As we observe our rituals and prayers, we remember those who have suffered and lost their lives in the Dingri area of Tibet.”

Prayers for a Peaceful New Year

Tenzin Lhamo, an exile Tibetan, shared her hopes for a better year ahead:
“We are celebrating our New Year with rituals and prayers. Many people celebrate for 15 to 30 days, offering fruits and Khapse (traditional Tibetan sweets) to our gods and deities. I sincerely wish for this New Year to be more peaceful so that we all can live happy lives.”

Despite the solemn mood, the spirit of Losar remains strong as Tibetans in exile pray for healing, peace, and a better future.
