New Delhi [India]: In a significant development for the Indian judiciary, three High Court judges—Justice NV Anjaria, Justice Vijay Bishnoi, and Justice AS Chandurkar—were sworn in on Friday as Judges of the Supreme Court of India.
The appointments come after the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, recommended their elevation during its meeting held on May 26, 2025. The Central Government approved the appointments on May 29.
Profiles of the New Supreme Court Judges:
- Justice NV Anjaria
Formerly the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Justice Anjaria began practising at the Gujarat High Court in August 1988. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gujarat High Court on November 21, 2011, and became a permanent judge on September 6, 2013. He was sworn in as Karnataka’s Chief Justice on February 25, 2024. - Justice Vijay Bishnoi
Justice Bishnoi served as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. Enrolled as an advocate on July 8, 1989, he practised in the Rajasthan High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal in Jodhpur. He became an Additional Judge of the Rajasthan High Court on January 8, 2013, and a permanent judge on January 7, 2015. He was elevated to Chief Justice on February 5, 2024. - Justice AS Chandurkar
Justice Chandurkar started his legal career in Mumbai in July 1988 and later moved his practice to Nagpur in 1992. He was appointed an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013.
With these appointments, the Supreme Court of India now operates at its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges—a milestone for the judiciary.
