Congress Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor voiced strong concerns on Wednesday regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent decision to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods. This new tariff, announced in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, is a serious blow to India’s export economy, according to Tharoor.
Speaking to reporters, Tharoor pointed out that this latest tariff raises the total to 50%, a rate he believes will make many Indian products unaffordable for American consumers. “That’s going to make our goods unaffordable to a lot of people in America,” he stated.
Tharoor warned that this move could cause India to lose its competitive edge to other countries that face lower tariff barriers, such as Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and even Pakistan. He emphasized that these nations could now more easily capture a share of the U.S. market that Indian exports once dominated.
