Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its first showroom in Mumbai’s upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). However, what should have been a moment of celebration has turned into a wave of online outrage over the sky-high prices of the Tesla Model Y variants.
According to Tesla’s Indian website, the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive is priced at ₹59.89 lakh, while the Long Range AWD variant goes up to ₹67.89 lakh. In contrast, the starting price for the Model Y in the U.S. is $44,990 — roughly ₹38.63 lakh — sparking criticism of what many see as unjustified markups.
What’s behind the price hike?
Tesla’s CFO Vaibhav Taneja explained that the inflated pricing is largely due to India’s steep import duties and luxury taxes.
“There’s a 70% tariff on EV imports and about 30% luxury tax,” he noted, as reported by CNBC.
These taxes are levied before adding road tax, insurance, and GST, making the on-road price of a Tesla even more unaffordable to many Indian buyers.
Social Media Reacts: “It’s not Tesla, it’s TAX-LA”
Outrage quickly spread across social platforms, where users criticized the tax burden and questioned the viability of Tesla’s business model in India.
“If you buy a #Tesla Model Y in India, you will pay around ₹33 lakh to the company and ₹28 lakh to the Government as taxes. If this is not tax extortion, I do not know what is,” one user wrote.
Another joked:
“Almost half of it is Tax. Instead of Tesla, it should be called ‘TAX-LA’ in India.”
A third added:
“#TeslaModelY price is doubled because of import duty and/or other taxes… Unless and until #Tesla starts manufacturing or at least assembling in #India, it won’t be successful.”
A fourth asked bluntly:
“That’s a hefty tax burden! Does any country tax its citizens like this?”
Tesla’s Positioning in India
Despite the backlash, experts suggest Tesla is targeting premium car buyers, competing with brands like BMW and Mercedes, rather than local EV manufacturers.
The first Tesla showroom, located in Maker Maxity Mall, was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who emphasized the need for local production.
“We wish to see research and development and manufacturing being done in India. I am sure Tesla will think about it at an appropriate stage,” Fadnavis said.
Will Tesla Localize Production?
While Elon Musk has previously hinted at entering India, Tesla has yet to set up manufacturing or assembly operations in the country. Without localization, Tesla vehicles will remain subject to steep import tariffs, potentially limiting their reach to only the wealthiest Indian consumers.
For now, Tesla’s entry may be more symbolic than disruptive — unless the automaker decides to build in India, aligning with the government’s “Make in India” initiative.
