Tensions Escalate In Nagpur Amid Violent Protests, Maharashtra CM Calls It A “Well-Planned Attack”

Mumbai (Maharashtra), March 18: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday condemned the violence that broke out in Nagpur, describing it as a “well-planned attack.” The unrest followed protests by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, fueled by rumors that religious materials had been burned. Addressing the legislative assembly, Fadnavis stated, “No one has permission to take law and order into their hands.”

The violence left several police officers injured, including three Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCPs). One DCP was reportedly attacked with an axe. Fadnavis confirmed that a total of 33 policemen were injured in the incident. He also mentioned that five civilians were hurt, with one still in the ICU. In response, authorities have imposed prohibitory orders in 11 police station areas and filed five separate FIRs related to the violence.

The situation has worsened with specific institutions and houses targeted during the violence. Authorities have seized a trolley of stones from the riot sites. Fadnavis emphasized that those responsible for attacking police officers or taking the law into their own hands will face strict action. “Attack on police will not be tolerated,” he stated.

The Chief Minister also linked the unrest to the release of the “Chhava” movie, which stirred anger against Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Fadnavis called for peace and urged citizens to maintain law and order in Maharashtra. “We will take action against anyone involved in riots, regardless of caste or religion,” he assured.

Meanwhile, a clash between the ruling Mahayuti and opposition members erupted in the legislative assembly, with Shiv Sena leaders calling for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. The opposition accused the government of mishandling the situation, while the ruling party blamed individuals for glorifying Aurangzeb.

BJP MLA Pravin Datke, who visited the violence-stricken Hansapuri area, echoed Fadnavis’ statements, claiming that the violence appeared to be “pre-planned.” He pointed out the selective vandalization of stalls and the destruction of surveillance cameras as evidence. Datke also criticized the police for not adequately supporting the Hindu citizens and suspected that some elements from outside the area contributed to the mob.

In response to the escalating violence, the Nagpur Police have imposed a curfew in multiple areas, including Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, and Shantinagar, under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The curfew will remain in effect until further notice.
