Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], December 30: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy introduced a condolence motion in the state assembly on Monday following the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. In his speech, CM Reddy described the demise of Dr. Singh as an “irreparable loss” for the country and praised his patience, humility, and dedication to the nation’s growth despite facing criticism.
He highlighted Dr. Singh’s significant contributions to India’s economy and society, noting his leadership in strengthening the country economically and politically. CM Reddy recalled how Dr. Singh had participated in protests in Delhi alongside them to safeguard democracy, emphasizing his unshakable commitment to democratic values.
The Telangana CM also acknowledged several landmark schemes introduced during Dr. Singh’s tenure, including the Employment Guarantee Scheme, which provided 100 days of work to the poor, the Food Security Act, the Right to Information Act, and the Land Acquisition Act of 2013, which benefitted the landless poor. He further mentioned Dr. Singh’s role in bringing the Forest Rights Act of 2006 into law and his continued inspiration from Dr. Ambedkar.
CM Reddy remembered Dr. Singh as a “soulmate” of Telangana, particularly for his role in the creation of the state, and expressed that the people of Telangana would forever hold him in their hearts.
In his tribute, CM Reddy moved a resolution urging the central government to award Dr. Manmohan Singh the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in recognition of his exceptional service to the nation. He also called for support from all political parties, irrespective of affiliations, for the resolution.
The Telangana government has also decided to install a statue of Dr. Manmohan Singh in Hyderabad to honor his contributions. Dr. Singh passed away on December 26 at the age of 92 due to age-related medical complications.
