Telangana Cabinet Scraps Two-Child Norm For Local Body Elections; Announces Bonus For Paddy Farmers

The Telangana state cabinet, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, took a big policy decision: they decided to lift the two-child limit for people running for local body elections.

After the cabinet meeting, State Information Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy told media that the move was true. The minister stated, “The cabinet decided to lift the restriction because it would help control the population in the state.” He also claimed that the regulation that indicated anyone with more than two children couldn’t run for local office had been looked at.

Help and extra money for rice farmers

The cabinet also talked about worries over the state’s agricultural output after the Kharif season set a record.

Procurement: This Kharif season, Telangana produced an incredible 80 lakh metric tonnes of paddy. The Central Government has agreed to buy 50 lakh metric tonnes, but the state will formally ask for another 15 lakh metric tonnes.

Farmer Bonus: The cabinet resolved to provide farmers who grow quality paddy types a big bonus of ₹500 per quintal on top of the Minimum Support Price (MSP). This will help farmers who grow premium rice.

Updates on Infrastructure and Governance

The cabinet also made a number of decisions about building infrastructure and celebrating the present government’s time in office:

Speeding up the Metro Rail Expansion

The administration chose to speed up the Metro Rail Phase 2A and 2B expansion projects. The potential of taking over operations from L&T, which is now running the project as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), was a major topic of conversation. To make this happen, a high-level committee led by the Chief Secretary will look into whether the takeover is possible and forward its report to a Cabinet sub-committee for a final decision.

Celebration of Two Years of Good Governance

The cabinet approved a nine-day public celebration called “Praja Palana – Praja Vijayotsavalu” (People’s Governance – People’s Victory Celebrations) to mark two years of the “people’s government.” The celebrations will take place from December 1 to 9, and a subcommittee of the Cabinet has been set up to plan and carry them out.
