India’s path to the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 received a timely boost after South Africa registered a commanding victory over West Indies on Thursday.
With that result, South Africa moved to four points at the top of Group 1 and confirmed their place in the last four. The focus now shifts to the battle for the second semi-final berth, where India, West Indies and Zimbabwe remain in contention.
What India Need To Qualify
Led by Suryakumar Yadav, India must win both their remaining Super 8 fixtures — against Zimbabwe in Chennai and West Indies in Kolkata — to secure qualification.
Earlier, India’s net run rate had dipped to -3.8, raising concerns. However, South Africa’s dominant win has ensured that net run rate is no longer a decisive factor if India manage back-to-back victories.
If India defeat Zimbabwe, the clash against West Indies in Kolkata effectively becomes a winner-takes-all encounter. A victory in both matches would see India finish second in Group 1 and book a semi-final at Wankhede Stadium on March 5.
With South Africa already through, the race for the remaining spot promises high drama as the tournament heads into its decisive phase.
