Syrian Rebels Advance on Homs, Threatening to Isolate Assad’s Regime

Damascus [Syria], December 8: Syrian rebels claim to have made significant advances into Homs, a key strategic city. Capturing Homs could sever President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, isolating the coastal territories from Damascus, CNN reported.

“After several qualitative night operations, remnants of the criminal regime are fleeing Homs. The city’s neighborhoods are being combed and prepared for complete liberation, God willing,” a spokesperson for the northern rebels stated on Saturday.

In response, the Syrian military issued a statement to residents via text messages, emphasizing its commitment to defending the country. “The Syrian Arab Army will continue its constitutional duty to restore security and stability across Syria,” the message read.

Meanwhile, government forces have reportedly withdrawn from several suburbs of Damascus, including Moadamia al-Sham and Daraya, as well as the Mezzeh military airport. These developments mark a significant shift in the ongoing conflict, with opposition fighters now advancing from the north and south to encircle Damascus.

The conflict, which began during the Arab Spring in 2011 as a crackdown on pro-democracy protests, has devastated Syria. Over 300,000 civilians have been killed, and millions have been displaced, according to the United Nations.

Adding to the international discourse, US President-elect Donald Trump stated that Syria’s situation is not America’s fight. “Opposition forces are making unprecedented advances. Russia, tied up in Ukraine with massive losses, appears incapable of intervening further,” Trump posted on Truth Social. Criticizing former President Barack Obama’s handling of Syria, Trump suggested that Assad’s possible removal might be beneficial for the country.

“This mess was exacerbated when Obama failed to honor his commitment to the red line in the sand. Now, both Assad and Russia may be forced out, and that could be the best outcome,” Trump remarked, reiterating his stance that the US should not intervene.

The Syrian conflict remains a complex and volatile situation, with far-reaching implications for the region and the world.
