Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], April 12: West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has urged Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to transfer the investigation into recent vandalism at railway stations in Murshidabad district to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
In a formal letter, Adhikari expressed concerns over the violent protests and their broader implications, noting Murshidabad’s proximity to Bangladesh and the suspected presence of radical outfits like the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). He emphasized that the NIA is best equipped to conduct a thorough and unbiased probe, and such an investigation would help expose the masterminds behind the violence while preventing future incidents.
Meanwhile, BJP MP and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of “threatening Hindus” and “trying to create a Bangladesh here.” He alleged that police in the state were inactive under her directives and that the situation in areas like Murshidabad was grave, with reports of looting and abuse.
“The police are doing nothing and are keeping quiet on Mamata Banerjee’s directions. Hindu women are being abused, and houses are being looted,” said Majumdar, also a junior minister for education. He confirmed that the BJP leadership in Delhi, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has been briefed on the situation.
Majumdar indicated that central government intervention might be necessary if the situation continues to escalate.
In contrast, the West Bengal Police stated on Saturday that the situation in Suti and Samserganj areas of Jangipur in Murshidabad has been brought under control. According to officials, the violence erupted during demonstrations opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Act. Police action reportedly dispersed the mob and restored order.
