Suvendu Adhikari Demands Discussion On South 24 Parganas Clashes, Seeks Visit to Victims

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 12: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, has demanded a detailed discussion in the assembly over the recent clashes between miscreants and police in South 24 Parganas district.

Adhikari revealed that two adjournment motions have been submitted to raise the issue, and he has formally written to the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Superintendent of Police in Diamond Harbour, seeking permission to visit the affected areas along with one MLA. He stated that BJP’s state president also plans to visit the site.

“This is a serious matter. I’ve already emailed the DGP and SP, asking to be allowed to meet the victims. We are pressing for an urgent discussion in the assembly and will also move the court if needed,” Adhikari said in a video message. He added that “Sanatanis” would stage statewide protests from 2 PM onwards today.

Referring to a previous High Court order, Adhikari said, “It clearly states that in case of communal violence—when common people are attacked, police are obstructed, or injured—the court can direct deployment of central paramilitary forces. That order is still valid until July 30.”

He alleged that 30–35 police personnel were injured in the clashes, five police vehicles were torched and vandalised, and stones were pelted at police, who eventually raised white flags.

The incident has led to heightened security in the Rabindra Nagar area of South 24 Parganas. BJP leaders, including Adhikari, claimed that a Shiva temple in Ward No. 7, Maheshtala, under the Metiabruz Assembly constituency, was vandalised during the unrest.

Adhikari also accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of blocking his request to meet with the DGP, alleging that senior officers informed him she instructed the police not to engage with him.
