In Washington, D.C. On Sunday, July 27, 2025, a suspicious package was found near the White House. Law enforcement quickly responded, sending in the bomb squad. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad sent experts to look into the device.
As a safety measure, police promptly blocked off the area around the suspicious package, stopping both foot and vehicle traffic. The U.S. Secret Service later confirmed that the package was on the pavement next to the fence line of the U.S. Treasury Building, which is next to the White House. It was just outside the protective cordon near the executive mansion.
Photos and videos from the scene showed emergency vehicles and bomb squad members surrounding the area while the inquiry went on. Authorities had told people to stay away from the area until further notice.
Following a thorough inspection by the EOD team, officials declared the area safe and issued a “all-clear.” The traffic closures that were put in place during the event have already been lifted.
The Secret Service said that someone who climbed a fence on the southeast side of the U.S. Treasury Building at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday left the suspicious package. Officers from the Uniformed Division quickly arrested the suspect and took him to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Authorities are likely to charge the suspect with breaking and entering, and he already has an outstanding warrant in another state.
This incident is similar to one that happened in June, when many buildings near the White House were evacuated because of a suspicious car. In another situation, officials also did a full investigation and found that there was no threat, therefore the location was pronounced safe.
