Munich [Germany], June 26: India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has undergone a successful sports hernia surgery in Munich, Germany, and is currently on the path to recovery, according to a report by ESPNcricinfo.
The star batter shared a health update on Instagram:
“Life Update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back.”
The 34-year-old, who was instrumental in Mumbai Indians’ (MI) journey to the IPL 2025 playoffs, capped a record-breaking season by scoring 717 runs—the highest-ever tally for an MI batter in a single season and the most by a non-opener in IPL history. He also became the first player to notch 16 consecutive 25+ scores in a T20 tournament.
Suryakumar’s decision to use the current break for surgery comes as India continue their Test tour of England, running until August 4. The recovery period is expected to see him fully fit to return for India’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh, starting August 26 in Chattogram, where he is likely to resume captaincy duties in the T20I format.
Following the retirement of veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja from T20Is after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, Suryakumar was entrusted with leading a new-look, aggressive T20 side. Under his captaincy, the team has embraced a fearless brand of cricket, setting records like the 297-run total vs Bangladesh in October 2024—the second-highest in T20I history.
As fans await his return, Suryakumar’s leadership is set to be key in shaping India’s next era of T20 dominance.
