The bench, which also included Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi, expressed disbelief at the sudden expansion of the MCA’s voter base.
- The Surge: The court noted that the membership remained relatively stable at 164 for decades (1986–2023), only to jump to 571 members just weeks before the 2026 election.
- The Remark: CJI Surya Kant remarked, “From 1986 to 2023, you had 164 members, and from 2023 onwards, you made a bumper draw? Do not invite more comments from us.”
Allegations of Nepotism
The legal battle was initiated by former Indian cricketer and BJP leader Kedar Jadhav. His petition alleged that the new list was packed with 401 “suddenly inducted” members, including:
- Family Members: Rohit Pawar’s wife (Kunti Pawar), his father-in-law (Satish Magar), and cousin Revati Sule (daughter of MP Supriya Sule).
- Business Associates: Employees from Pawar’s private companies and various NCP-SP political leaders.
- The “Bat” Comment: The CJI criticized the quality of the new members, stating, “Who are you bringing? Those who do not even know the game of cricket… do not even know how to handle a bat.”
Case Status: Withdrawal and Next Steps
Facing the threat of a formal dismissal with harsh observations, Rohit Pawar’s counsel, Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, opted to withdraw the petition.
