Supreme Court Asks Ministry To Reclaim Ex-CJI Chandrachud’s Official Residence After Deadline Lapses

New Delhi (India), July 6: The Supreme Court administration has formally urged the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to take immediate steps to vacate Bungalow No. 5, Krishna Menon Marg, currently occupied by former Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud, as he continues to stay in the official residence beyond the allowed period.

In a letter dated July 1 addressed to the ministry’s secretary, the Supreme Court administration emphasized that both the standard six-month post-retirement period under Rule 3B of the 2022 Supreme Court Judges Rules—which expired on May 10, 2025—and an additional special retention permission, which lapsed on May 31, 2025, have passed.

“I am to request you to take the possession of Bungalow No. 5, Krishna Menon Marg, from Justice DY Chandrachud without any further delay,” the letter stated, noting that the bungalow is part of the Supreme Court’s official housing pool and needs to be returned for reallocation.

Under the Supreme Court Judges Rules, a retired Chief Justice can retain official accommodation for a maximum of six months after demitting office. Chandrachud’s continued occupancy beyond that period has prompted the court’s administration to seek immediate intervention by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
