New Delhi, June 6 : The Supreme Court of India on Friday granted an extension to the National Board of Examinations (NBE) to conduct the NEET-PG 2025 examination on August 3, postponing it from its originally scheduled date of June 15.
A bench comprising Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Augustine George Masih passed the order while emphasizing that no further extension will be granted beyond the new date.
“We are satisfied that the prayer for extension of time is bona fide. Accordingly, the time allowed by our order dated May 30, for holding the examination is extended,” the Court stated.
Why the NEET PG Exam Was Rescheduled
Earlier, on May 30, the top court ruled that the NEET PG 2025 exam must be conducted in a single shift, rejecting NBE’s plan to hold it in two shifts, calling it “arbitrary.”
The NBE then filed an application seeking additional time to make new arrangements to comply with the court’s directive.
During Friday’s hearing, the NBE and Centre informed the bench that conducting the exam in a single shift required fresh logistical planning due to the large number of applicants.
“There are 2.5 lakh candidates and only 450 centres. We need to add more centres and implement strict security measures. Also, candidates must be given an opportunity to choose new centres based on location,” the counsel explained.
Court’s Final Decision
After considering the arguments, the Supreme Court accepted the request and allowed the NEET PG exam to be held on August 3, stressing that this is the final extension.
Key Highlights:
- New NEET PG 2025 exam date: August 3, 2025
- Initial date: June 15, 2025
- Reason for postponement: Compliance with single-shift order
- Candidate count: Approx. 2.5 lakh
- Exam centres currently available: 450
- Court’s stance: No further extensions allowed
This judgment comes as a major update for medical PG aspirants, with candidates advised to regularly check official NBE portals for updated information on centre selection and admit card release.
