New Delhi [India], April 7: BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi on Monday strongly criticized the opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, alleging that states like Tamil Nadu and J&K are showing “utter contempt” for the Constitution by challenging legislation passed by Parliament.
Speaking to the media, Trivedi asserted that the Bill was passed through due constitutional process, and no state government has the authority to oppose a law enacted by Parliament.
“The type of scenes witnessed in the J&K Assembly, if they are tearing it apart, means these are the people under whose hands the Constitution is in danger,” he said.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA Irfan Hafeez Lone called the Waqf Amendment Act an attack on secularism and federalism, accusing the Centre of “brazenly violating” the Constitution, democracy, and the rule of law.
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed chaotic scenes as opposition members from the National Conference and allies protested the Act and the Speaker’s rejection of their adjournment motion seeking debate on the issue. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather ruled out the discussion, citing the matter as sub judice.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025—aimed at enhancing the management, development, and accountability of waqf properties—was passed by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in early April. President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent on April 5, officially enacting it into law.
The Bill includes provisions to streamline waqf surveys, ease registration, and speed up dispute resolution, while also empowering waqf boards to better manage properties.
