Subhasish Bose Emerges As Key Attacker For Mohun Bagan Super Giant In ISL 2024

New Delhi (India), February 15: Subhasish Bose, a defensive stalwart for Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG), has been instrumental in the team’s push to become the first-ever Indian Super League (ISL) side to retain the League Shield. Known for his solid defensive abilities, this season has seen Bose take on a new role as an attacking threat, particularly from set-pieces, according to the official ISL website.

A major factor in Bose’s transformation has been his increased involvement in set-piece situations. As the significance of set-pieces in the ISL grew, the Mariners’ captain has emerged as a key figure, leveraging his aerial prowess and excellent positioning inside the box. Under coach Jose Molina, known for his effective set-piece strategies, Bose has been encouraged to make attacking runs during dead-ball situations, adding a new dimension to his game.

The sight of Bose celebrating after scoring has become increasingly familiar to Mohun Bagan SG supporters. With six goals to his name this season, he has set a new record for the most goals scored by a defender in a single ISL campaign. Remarkably, he has surpassed his previous total of four goals from the last seven seasons combined.

Mohun Bagan SG have scored 19 goals from set-pieces this season, more than any other team in the league. Their set-piece tally is just two shy of Odisha FC and only one away from setting a new all-time ISL record for most set-piece goals in a season.

Bose’s six goals have all come from set-piece situations, including a hat-trick of headers against fierce rivals Mohammedan SC over two matches. He scored a brace in their recent encounter, contributing a goal and an assist in the previous meeting with the Black and White Brigade. Additionally, Bose has netted goals in the Mariners’ wins against NorthEast United FC and Hyderabad FC, as well as a goal in their 1-1 draw against Jamshedpur FC.

His ability to time his runs, overpower defenders, and attack the ball with precision has made him a constant threat during set-pieces. Whether it’s towering headers from corners or pouncing on second balls, Bose has become an indispensable asset for his team in front of goal.

With his aerial dominance, sharp game-reading ability, deceptive pace, and precise passing, Bose stands out among defenders in the league. His leadership qualities have further bolstered Mohun Bagan SG’s defense, making them a more formidable unit at both ends of the pitch.

At 29, Bose has also benefitted from strong defensive partnerships with fellow defenders Alberto Rodriguez and Tom Aldred, who have each contributed significantly with four and three goals, respectively. Full-back Asish Rai and academy graduate Dippendu Biswas have also made important contributions to the team’s defensive stability and attacking transitions.

Mohun Bagan SG have set a new benchmark this season, with 13 goals scored by defenders, five more than the previous record of eight goals set by Chennaiyin FC (2017-18) and FC Goa (2019-20).

Bose’s transformation from a reliable defender to a goal-scoring leader has not only highlighted his evolution but also given Mohun Bagan SG a significant attacking advantage. As the team closes in on their League Shield ambitions, the captain’s impact at both ends of the pitch is proving to be a key factor in their success.
