Balasore, Odisha – July 6:
A shocking incident unfolded at Fakir Mohan College in Balasore when a second-year B.Ed student attempted self-immolation on campus after allegedly being ignored by college authorities over her sexual harassment complaint against a teacher who is the Head of Department.
The woman, reportedly under severe mental stress, had earlier filed a written complaint on June 30, accusing the teacher of sexual misconduct. Despite staging a week-long protest demanding action, no decisive steps were taken, according to her peers.
After meeting Principal Dilip Ghosh on Saturday and pleading for action once again, she allegedly set herself ablaze in front of the college building. Another male student, who tried to save her, also sustained burn injuries.
Both were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital, and the woman was later referred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where her condition remains critical.

- The accused teacher has been detained at Sahadevkhunta Police Station.
- SP Raj Prasad and a forensic team are investigating the scene.
- College Principal Ghosh stated that the Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) was inquiring into the matter at the time of the incident.

Balasore MLA Manas Dutta after visiting the hospital said:
“The health condition of the woman student is critical. Our first priority is to save her life.”
Friends of the victim claimed she was mentally and emotionally broken by the inaction of both the college administration and local police.
