Kolkata: A 24-year-old student of South Calcutta Law College was allegedly gangraped by three individuals inside the college’s guard room, police confirmed on Friday. The survivor has told investigators that she had earlier rejected a marriage proposal from the main accused, 31-year-old Monojit Mishra, who is reportedly affiliated with the ruling Trinamool Congress’s student wing, the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP).
According to the woman’s complaint, Mishra had pressured her into marriage, but she declined, citing an existing relationship. “They tried to force me with the intention of having sex. I denied and fought back by not letting him do anything and pushing him back. I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend and I love my boyfriend. But they did not agree,” the survivor stated in her complaint, as reported by India Today.
She further alleged that Mishra threatened to harm her boyfriend and implicate her parents in false cases. The incident reportedly took place between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM on Wednesday after the woman had gone to the college around 4 PM for some academic work. She was allegedly confined in the guard room by Mishra and two others.
The victim recounted that she begged for mercy, even touching the feet of the main accused, but was dragged into the guard room and sexually assaulted. “They had locked the main gate of the college, and the guard was helpless and did not help,” the complaint reads.
She also claimed that the accused filmed the assault and used the footage to blackmail her into silence. “They recorded videos of mine when the accused was raping me. They threatened me to show these videos to everyone if I do not cooperate,” the student alleged.
According to the complaint, the woman suffered a panic attack during the assault and requested medical help, but her pleas went unanswered. When she eventually tried to escape, the accused allegedly tried to hit her with a hockey stick. She was finally released later that night but under the threat of further harm.
Following the filing of an FIR at Kasba Police Station, police arrested all three accused. The main accused, Monojit Mishra, is a former student and currently serves as the general secretary of the South Kolkata district unit of TMCP. The two others arrested are Zaib Ahmed (19), a first-year law student, and Pramit Mukherjee alias Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), another current student of the college.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are examining digital evidence and CCTV footage related to the case.
