Kathmandu [Nepal], March 29: Former Australian batter Stuart Law has been appointed as the new head coach of the Nepal Senior Cricket Team, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) confirmed on Friday, March 28. Law replaces Monty Desai, who stepped down in February 2024.
Stuart Law’s Coaching Credentials
The 56-year-old brings vast coaching experience, having previously worked with USA, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies, and Afghanistan at the international level. His most recent stint was with the USA men’s team, where he guided them to a historic ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.
During the tournament, the USA stunned Pakistan in the group stage and defeated Canada, securing a spot in the Super Eight stage.
As a player, Law represented Australia in 55 international matches between 1994 and 1999.
Challenges Ahead for Law with Nepal
His first assignment as Nepal’s head coach will be the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series in June, where Nepal will compete against Scotland and the Netherlands.
Nepal currently sits 7th among the eight teams, with just two wins from 12 matches.
- The top four teams from the League (running until December 2026) will qualify for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 Qualifier stage.
- The bottom four teams will have to compete in a Qualifier Play-off.
Nepal’s Cricket Journey So Far
Nepal made their maiden ICC global event appearance in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh. They have been playing international matches since 1996 under the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and have participated in multiple tournaments, including:
- ICC World Cup Qualifiers (2001, 2014)
- ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers (2012, 2013, 2015)
- ICC Intercontinental Cup (2004, 2005)
- ACC Premier League (2014)
- Asian Games (2010, 2014)
With Stuart Law at the helm, Nepal will look to improve their performance and push for qualification to the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
