Delhi Bar Associations Announce Strike Against Proposed Advocates Amendment Bill 2025

New Delhi [India]: The Coordination Committee of All Bar Associations of Delhi has unanimously decided to oppose the Advocates Amendment Bill 2025 and has called for a complete strike from judicial work on Monday across all District Courts in Delhi.

The committee argues that the proposed bill is unjust and biased and has urged legal professionals to support their protest.

“Members are encouraged to support this effort to safeguard the dignity and independence of the legal profession,” the committee stated in a communication to lawyers. Judicial officers have also been requested not to pass any adverse orders in cases scheduled for the day.

Government Seeks Public Input on Legal Reforms

The Government of India has recently sought public feedback on the Draft Advocates (Amendment) Bill 2025, which aims to modernize the legal framework. The bill proposes amendments to the Advocates Act, 1961, originally enacted to regulate the legal profession, protect client interests, and maintain professional standards.

According to the Ministry of Law and Justice, the proposed amendments seek to:

  • Align legal education with global best practices
  • Equip lawyers for modern legal challenges
  • Improve transparency and accessibility in the legal profession
  • Strengthen professional standards

The government emphasized that these reforms aim to ensure that the legal profession contributes to a just and equitable society. The Department of Legal Affairs has invited public comments as part of a consultation process.

Despite these intentions, the Delhi Bar Associations strongly oppose the bill, citing concerns over its impact on the independence of the legal profession.
